Secondary Progressions and Solar Arc Directions: APRIL ’19

On April 19, Ron Tiggle will speak on Secondary Progressions and Solar Arc Directions. Secondary Progressions and Solar Arc Directions are two of the most important predictive techniques astrologers use. Yet, few astrologers know how to calculate Secondary progressions correctly, and since Solar Arc Directions are derived from the Secondary progressed Sun, these are also in error.

Edward Johndro identified this error 90 years ago, yet more recent textbooks on Astrology are still teaching the traditional incorrect method for computing Secondary Progressions and Solar Arc directions. Although some astrological software includes the correct method for computing Secondary Progressions, the default method in the software is the incorrect one. And some programs only include the incorrect method of calculating Secondary Progressions and Solar Arcs. In addition, this error also affects tertiary progression calculations.

During his presentation, Ron will show you how to calculate Secondary Progressions and Solar Arc Directions correctly and point out why the traditional method is incorrect and describe the magnitude of the error. The correct calculation options will be identified in popular astrological software such as Sirius, Solar Fire, and Kepler 7. A method will also be given to correct the error when your software only uses the traditional method.

Dr. Tiggle has a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from UCLA an MA in Psychology from California State University, Long Beach and a BS in Chemistry from Howard University. He has worked as a Research Psychologist for several Federal agencies conducting social science research in organizational and health psychology.

Ron is a former Research Director for the International Society for Astrological Research, and a contributing author to Astrological Research Methods Volume 1. Ron has also published research in a traditional refereed psychology journal providing validating evidence for astrology. He is Certified as a Professional Astrologer by Professional Astrologers Inc and is also a Lifetime member of the International Society for Astrological Research (ISAR) and the American Federation of Astrologers.
He also teaches classes on a meditation technique known as the Rainbow Bridge Meditation.

Relationship Astrology: MARCH ’19

Cynthia Zimmerman will facilitate a discussion on synastry or relationship astrology. Looking at charts of well-known couples we will be answering questions such as what causes attraction between two people? What creates long-lasting relationships? How do you know your soul mate? How do planets and aspects influence relationships between people?

Cynthia Zimmerman began studying astrology in the early 1970’s beginning with classes from Sylvia DeLong in Casadega, Florida. She practiced astrology only for herself and for friends. However, further studies with David Cochrane in Gainesville, Florida brought an interest in harmonic astrology. Meeting with groups, these principles were applied to individual charts. Robert Hand is also a significant influence through readings. Synastry or Relationship astrology has been a continuing interest as well as study of the influence of planets throughout our lives.

Astrology of Astrologers: FEB ’19

Asheville Friends of Astrology will meet at 7pm on February 15 in the community room at Earth Fare Westgate. David Leskowitz will be speaking to us about the astrology of astrologers. David will lead a discussion about the charts of prominent astrologers. What makes an astrologer an astrologer? Can we see it in their horoscope? Likewise, can we see the kind of astrologer they become based on their natal placements? Also, does the tradition itself have anything to say about these questions? Is there an “astrology signature” in the birthchart?

We will look at a diverse range of historical and modern figures in our favorite field. To start, let’s delve into the inception chart of the AFOA! The talk will leave lots of room for audience participation and questions.

For the past four years David has made an extensive study of the Centaur planets as they relate to the timing of visionary experiences. David works with the Centaur planets in his astrological counseling and healing practice based in Asheville NC. Website: / facebook: Hominy Creek Horoscopy.

Introduction to Mundane Astrology: JAN ’19

Asheville Friends of Astrology will meet on Friday, January 18 at 7pm in the community room at Earth Fare Westgate. Our speaker will be Diotima Mantineia. Her topic will be an introduction to mundane astrology. While there are certainly differences between natal and mundane astrology (the astrology of world affairs), anyone with a solid grasp of the former will find the latter is easily learned. Diotima will discuss the types of charts that are used for prediction, and expand the basic sign, planet and house rulerships to include the focus of mundane work — government, economics, politics, culture. Then we’ll look at the chart of the United States, as well as recent eclipse and ingress charts, in light of the latest news to illustrate the techniques.

Diotima Mantineia began studying astrology in 1968, taking classes from Zoltan Mason in New York City. For the next 22 years, she practiced astrology only for herself and her friends, continuing her studies while watching an increasingly humanistic, psychologically oriented, modern astrology blossom through the work of leading astrologers such as Noel Tyl, Liz Greene, Rob Hand, Marion March, Stephen Arroyo and Howard Sasportas. In 1986, Diotima began her study of Wicca and started reading Tarot, discovering that she is a gifted intuitive. In 1991, she began practicing both astrology and Tarot professionally. She majored in plant and soil science both in college and grad school, and grows much of her own food and “materia magica” on her land in the mountains of western North Carolina. Diotima’s personal spiritual path is rooted in the Western mystery traditions, the principles of Yoga, and a profound connection with the natural world. Wicca gives structure to her spiritual journey, and she utilizes shamanic practices for healing and to live in harmony with Nature. Over 18 years of studying Chinese martial arts has given her a deep appreciation of Taoist thought which has strongly influenced her magical and personal philosophy. You can find her at

Chakras, Mythology and Astrological Symbolism: OCTOBER ’18

Asheville Friends of Astrology will meet on Friday, October 19 at 7pm in the community room at Earth Fare Westgate. Johnny Barnett will speak on Chakras, Mythology and Astrological Symbolism. Johnny will lead us on an empowering and mind-opening journey through our energetic or “Spiritual” anatomy — symbolized by the 7 Chakras — which guides us towards a life of meaning, purpose, love and fulfillment. Astrologers will be re-introduced to the Hermetic correspondence of Planets to Chakras- allowing them to expand their astrological vocabulary and practice. Astrologers and non-astrologers alike will be treated to a generous helping of esoteric knowledge and a sprinkle of contemporary culture to help bring our astrological role-models — the ancient characters of Greek Mythology — into the present day. Add in a strong dose of insight from modern authors including Eckhart Tolle and Don Miguel Ruiz and you will find your heart and mind opened to the Spiritual Reality that lies just beneath the surface of our modern world — ready to be re-discovered, celebrated and consciously embodied by each and every one of us!

Johnny has been a practicing Astrologer for over 26 years. His unique astrological perspective is based upon the relationship between the 7 planets of classical astrology and the 7 Chakras–thus Chakraology – an embracing of the Hermetic wisdom “as without, so within”.  He draws upon his complementary studies in symbolism, mythology, Jungian psychology, physics and the works of contemporary and recent thinkers such as Eckhart Tolle and Joseph Campbell, as well as his experiences as a father, husband, entrepreneur, community activist and musician to inform his work. Johnny currently travels the US teaching Chakraology classes and doing private astrological readings. See more on his website,

Community Q&A: SEPT ’18

Asheville Friends of Astrology’s next meeting will be on September 21, 2018 at 7pm in the community room at Earth Fare Westgate. This will be a moderated question and answer session, with members posing and answering questions about astrology.

Members can submit questions ahead of the meeting and those questions will be sent out to the membership prior to the meeting. Attendees could also ask questions during the meeting. Questions could be general in nature (in other words, about issues in astrology, the interpretation of certain astrological configurations, the meaning of certain astrological symbols, etc.). Questions could potentially also be about your individual chart. For any such questions, be prepared to provide details of your chart–transits and progressions would be helpful. We will not have projection equipment at this meeting so being clear about the relevant factors in your chart would be important.

Once a question is posed, meeting attendees will discuss and give answers to that question. Ronnie Watkins will moderate the meeting–introducing the questions and keeping the flow of the discussion going in an orderly manner. Please send any questions you would like discussed to Ronnie at
